How we test that leggings are squat-proof
Every activewear supplier says their leggings are squat-proof. Almost none will show you. The test itself takes under a minute, and there is no reason a buyer should have to take it on trust — so this is exactly how we run it, and what happens when a fabric fails.
The test
Bright, direct light. A contrasting colour worn underneath. A full squat, held — not a quick dip. That combination is deliberately harsher than anything the garment will meet in a gym, because a test that the product passes easily tells you nothing.
Under load, the knit stretches and the gaps between yarns open. If the fabric is going to go sheer, that is when and where it happens. Standing still in a showroom, almost anything passes.
Why we film it rather than describe it
A written claim that a legging is squat-proof is unfalsifiable at the point where you have to decide. A video of your actual sample, in your actual colourway, under that lighting, is not.
You get it before you approve the sample, which means the decision to proceed to bulk is made on evidence rather than on our word. It also puts the burden in the right place: if we cannot produce the video, that is information too.
What we change when it fails
We change the fabric, before bulk. Not the lighting, not the photograph, and not the description.
Opacity under stretch is a property of the fabric and the knit, so it is not something that can be corrected in sewing or finishing. Colour matters too — lighter and heathered fabrics show through at lower stretch than dark solids, so a range that passes in black is not automatically cleared in grey. Each colourway is its own test.
What actually makes a legging perform
- Recovery — the fabric returning to shape rather than bagging at the knee — comes from spandex content around 20–25% and from knit tension, not from raw thickness.
- Softness comes from brushing the nylon/spandex face, which is a finishing decision separate from the performance of the base fabric.
- Waistband memory comes from an inner powernet layer.
- A diamond gusset and a seamless front panel are standard on our pattern, drafted in-house — both reduce the seam stress that causes failures at exactly the point squat tests expose.
- Stress seams run on industrial 4-needle 6-thread flatlock, with coverstitch on hems. We will show the machine on video.
Sizing across colours
Every colourway is measured after wash and the numbers recorded, because dye and finishing move fabric differently. Extended sizes are re-drafted rather than simply scaled up — widening a pattern moves the gusset and the panel seams to places they were not designed to sit, which is where fit complaints in larger sizes usually originate.
